- TRANSFERABLE SKILLS
-
- People used to look at jobs as lifetime commitments and identified
- closely with their particular job. For many, this way of looking at
- themselves is no longer useful. Now, it's important to view
- yourself in a "skill capacity" manner. Rather than saying "I'm a
- line supervisor for the phone company." it is better to say "I'm a
- person with ____ skills that can be used by IBM, General Motors, a
- machine shop, etc."
-
- By thinking of yourself as a person with skills rather than as a
- person with a particular job title, you can break out of the little
- box that you, and others, may have put you in. Changing the way
- you see yourself can open new doors for you in your job search.
-
- For many people, taking this new look at themselves is hard. To
- assist you in recognizing the skills that you actually have, the
- "Transferable Skill Analysis" form is provided. Under "work
- achievements" list all your work experience, your volunteer
- experience, your work at home experience, and your hobbies. Then,
- under "things you know" list the corresponding skills.
-
- The "things you know" should actually be looked at from three
- separate perspectives.
- 1. Think about what you did with things.
- 2. Think about what you did with people.
- 3. Think about what you did with information.
-
- Example: Line Supervisor
-
- 1. Things: Sorted requests, ordered parts, maintained job
- lists.
-
- 2. People: Gave instructions, helped crew, instructed crew,
- supervised work quality.
-
- 3. Information: Interpreted directions, organized instructions,
- kept records, memorized information quickly.
-

- provided in the following lists.
